Performance Braking
Normally when we use the word performance, slowing down is the last thing on our mind. This is something, however, that should always be in our thoughts, because no matter what it is you drive, it has brakes to slow you down and eventually bring you to a complete stop. Not many people out there even consider their braking system as part of performance strategy. It really depends what stage of the game you are at and what type of performance situation you put your machine into.
In my experience, on either a road course or an auto cross circuit, braking can make time like you wouldn’t believe. The less braking required results in more time you can remain on the throttle. It doesn't matter if you are on a bike, in a formula one car or in a performance production car, braking makes a difference. Now you do not need to be in a racing situation to see that different systems can make a vehicle drive a whole bunch better. When you get into many of the old muscle cars, they were only equipped with a drum braking system. A conversion to disc brakes can create a whole new animal and will definitely conform your driving habits in a more aggressive nature. Now stepping up from a standard disc brake system, the aftermarket offers a large range of products that may give you the extra edge you need. Now do your research wisely and find the product that is correct for not only the vehicle you drive, but also the application you require the system for.
The standard braking components on many of the new cars today are fantastic and may just be sufficient for your needs. The shoes you choose are one variable that is lees costly, but can make a difference. The brake shoe is where I am going here and there are many options. Many high performance brake shoes are terrible in a vehicle that gets you to work and back. Now if you take those brakes and warm them up to above "normal" temperatures, the way they are supposed to be used, you will find they can change your braking entirely. If this is not the cure to your problem, you may have to dig deeper into the wallet and begin to research a complete package including rotors and calipers. Now I am not saying you need to go spend $10,000 on a Brembo Brake package, because believe me these are nice, but very few ever get to this level. There is a middle ground and you will find that there are some very affordable products available.
One side effect that a performance braking system creates is heat. There is middle ground here as well. You need a certain degree of heat, but too much leads to brake fade and this can be as big of a problem as it sounds. Many race cars and bikes get absolutely so hot they glow red while in use. These are usually cooled by not only extensive venting, but also by liquid. Sounds pretty fancy, doesn't it? Well, it is, and if ever you get a chance to get a peek at some of the braking systems used in racing today, do not pass it up because the manufacturers of these systems take their business very seriously. For most of you out there you may need only some extra air ducts to give your rotors a little breathing room. This is very common at any level of motor sports and can even help your factory setup if you're the type that likes to push the envelope.
