My 81 Corvette
I fell in love with Corvettes back in the 1970's when my sister Cathy used to take me to the Westwood Racetrack on Sunday afternoons. I always knew someday I would own a Corvette I just didn't think it would take 37 years before I would finally find myself driving a piece of racing car history.
In the summer of 2006 I bought a 1981 limited edition yellow Corvette complete with a 4 speed stick, removable sun roof and black leather interior, 94,000 original kilometres and original dash and interior from Corvette Specialties. On the outside it looked like new, under the hood it ran like new and I could tell the first time I test drove it tell that the boys here weren't trying to sell me a load of goods. Since then I have been happily tinkering with it trying to make it more like the car of childhood dreams. Owners Bruce Iqqulden and his brother Glen were most helpful when I came to them in March of 2007 asking for more power. I think my exact words were "Guys I am dam tired of those Mustangs blowing my doors off." They made some suggestions, worked up pretty airtight quotes, working within my budget, which is a nice change in the auto industry, and my 1981 Vette soon became the my car of dreams. They installed new high performance exhausts, Hooker headers and a new camshaft. Replacing the first year computer chip operated carburetor & manifold with a 1980 non-computer one was the final touch. All though I have not had it checked out the guys at Corvette Specialties tell me I have gone from a perky 195 horses to 300 galloping stallions. What I can tell you for sure is that the fun factor has gone through the roof.
Living here on the North Shore I thought for sure I would eventually look to find a mechanic a little closer to home. It is forty-five minutes of choking traffic to Corvette and back and some days that seems a little much. But after just a few visits to see the guys at Corvette I am happy to take the Sky train there and back just to have them look my car over and take care of it. I think Bruce calls himself the Doctor and for good reasons. . From the paint room through to the guys under my hood I couldn't think of a better team to be intrusting my first Corvette to. And what kind of a job did they do on installing those high performance parts? Let's just say that come October I will probably still go moose hunting with my truck, but this summer I am going Mustang hunting with my Corvette and I am prepared to score a lot of Ford Pony tails
